Problem:
The furniture was too big for the room, awkwardly arranged and there was very little space to walk through the room from the front door into the rest of the house. With only one oversized sofa, the seating wasn’t guest friendly. The room gets very little direct light, the existing lamps were inadequate and the brick fireplace was incomplete.
Living Room Before:
Solution:
The first step was creating a furniture layout with small scale upholstered seating. The walkway through the room is now wide enough to comfortably avoid banging into furniture. Built-in cabinetry, a wood mantle and tile improved the fireplace area. The flat screen TV was relocated to the new mantle for optimum viewing from the sectional sofa. Four table lamps provide flexible lighting. The warm ocher and deep red color scheme is anchored by touches of black in the area rug and furniture finishes, and energized with accents of turquoise in accessories and art. The room is richly layered with exotic details such as the metal Turkish tiles on the fireplace, cabinetry glazed and stenciled with a custom variation on an Islamic seven circle pattern, & glass bead trim on the embroidered faux-silk draperies. A painted Mongolian chest holds accessories from India and Morocco. The finishing touch was custom framed artwork by three local artists.
